Farmers in Karnataka’s Vijayapura (Karnataka Farmers Protest) staged an unusual protest against power cuts, in which they took a crocodile to the office of the state-run Hubli Electricity Supply Company (Hescom). Farmers are facing problems in agricultural activities due to power cuts, against which they took crocodiles. Due to inadequate power supply during the day, farmers have to go to the fields at night, which puts them at risk from wild animals and snakes.

Unique protest by farmers

Last week a farmer saw a crocodile in his field. The farmer had gone to water his crops after electricity came late at night. Villagers said that the crocodile might have come in search of prey from the nearby Krishna river. After this, the farmer immediately called fellow villagers, who tied the crocodile and took it to the Hescom office on October 19 to make it aware of the danger. Seeing the crocodile, the Hescom officials got scared and informed the police and forest officials.

Farmers troubled by electricity shortage

The officials assured the villagers that they would ensure that there was no power cut during the day. Forest officials later released the crocodile in the Almaty Dam. It is believed that the crocodile might have strayed from the dam and came to the fields. Agriculture Department officials say that due to less rain this year, agricultural activities have been disrupted. He said that there is not enough water in the dams to release water for irrigation. Farmers depend on borewells for irrigation of their fields. Due to excessive use of electricity for agriculture, there is shortage of electricity.
