Chandrayaan-3 Vikram Lander removed dust from the Moon as soon as it landed

Vikram lander of India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission landed near the south pole of the Moon on August 23, 2023.

New Delhi :

Chandrayaan-3 mission: Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram lander module ejected 2.06 tonnes of lunar epiregolith (Moon dust) and created a “spectacular ejecta halo”. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said this on Friday. The space agency said that material was removed from 108.4 M2 area around the lander landing site.

Indian space agency ISRO also shared a link to the document along with its details on X. “As the Chandrayaan-3 lander module touched down on August 23, 2023, it created a spectacular ‘ejecta halo’ of lunar material,” ISRO wrote. NRSC/ISRO scientists estimate that about 2.06 tonnes of lunar epiregolith was brought to the landing site. “An area of approximately 108.4 M2 was removed.”

The document shared by ISRO on “A significant amount of surface epiregolith material was ejected from the surface, resulting in a reflectance anomaly or ejecta halo.”

ISRO said, “We compared pre- and post-landing high-resolution panchromatic imagery from the Orbiter High-Resolution Camera (OHRC) of the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter. These were acquired a few hours before and after landing. The ‘ejecta halo’ feature is visible as an irregular bright patch around the lander.”

India took a big leap on August 23 by successfully landing the Chandrayaan-3 lander module on the south pole of the Moon. With this, India became the first country to achieve this historic achievement. With this, the disappointment over the crash landing of India’s Chandrayaan two years ago ended. After America, China and Russia, India has become the fourth country to successfully land on the surface of the Moon.

India launched its first solar mission Aditya-L1 on September 2, soon after the soft landing of Chandrayaan-3. He has successfully gone through four exercises in his journey so far.
